HEADTEACHER'S MESSAGE

We've had a really positive week in school which sets us up nicely for an excellent academic year ahead. I'd like to take this opportunity to welcome all our new parents/carers and to say 'welcome back' to everyone else! I hope all families were able to get some time together over the last 6 weeks and enjoy the summer.

Like always, we want to work in partnership with you as the school year progresses. Please do get in touch with your child's class teacher or a senior leader if you have a worry or a query about anything.

The Year 3 children have been excellent this week and tell me that they've thoroughly enjoyed their start at junior school. We look forward to a wonderful year of learning with them.

I'd like to take this opportunity to pay our respects to Queen Elizabeth II, what an amazing service she has given to the country. She has certainly been an inspirational figurehead for the country and the Commonwealth over such a long period of time. We have talked about her life today a little today, and I'm sure we will do more next week. It is an important historical period and one the children will want to talk about and make sense of. Please do let us know if your child is worried or upset by yesterday's news, so we can help them deal with their emotions and worries.  We will share any further news that may affect schools in due course, but school is open all next week.

We have some dates for your diary below and will be adding to them in the next week or so, so please do check to see what is coming up.

We have some tired children in school today! I hope all get time to recharge over the weekend.

Kind regards

Matt Walton, Headteacher

School Day

Please remember the second buzzer goes at 8:45am, which signals the start of the school day. Please try to be as punctual as possible.

School Uniform

The children are looking really smart in their uniform. If your child doesn't have the appropriate uniform, we will write a note in their home/school diary. If you have any problems getting uniform, please do get in contact to see if we can help.

Bikes/Scooters

We encourage cycling and scooters.  We also strongly encourage children to be wearing cycling helmets if they are biking to school. Please do not let your child bike or scooter in the school playground or car park. Bikes and scooters should be stored in the school bike shed during the school day.

Lunches

We are aware some children are ordering hot dinners but bringing a packed lunch instead. If this is the case, please phone the office to cancel the meal.

Snacks/Packed lunches

Last term the Eco-team ran some 'healthy Wednesday's' encouraging healthier snacks at break-time. When the Eco-team are up and running, this maybe something they will want to bring back. In the meantime, we encourage a healthy snack for morning break. Sweets or chocolate bars are not allowed. We do allow a chocolate biscuit/wafer bar.

We also would like to point out that we are a nut free school and children should not be bringing in any foods with nut content at break times or in packed lunches. Thank you for your help with this.

Friends' AGM and Macmillan coffee morning

As a parent or carer of a child at Sprowston Junior, you are automatically a friend of the school. The AGM for the 'Friends' Association' will be held at 9:45am on Friday 30th September. This will follow on from a Macmillan Coffee morning held at 9am. You are welcome to come one or both of the events. We hope that the 'Friends' will be able to host many events over the school year and the support from the friends continues to be a very important part of school life.

Year 3 have been discussing what The Queen meant to them.

Trips

One discussion point amongst the senior team this week has been about school trips and the costs involved. We appreciate the cost of living has risen in the last few months, and it isn't an easy time at the moment for families. We really believe that school trips enrich the curriculum at SJS significantly, and we want to see all year groups enjoying them if we possibly can. Year groups will be evaluating the value for money and learning opportunities before deciding which trips they would like to take the children on.

Every year group will be giving parents more notice this year which we hope will help with financial planning.  As ever, all payments are voluntary, but we do require support to be able to run school trips and do often subsidise the costs to parents/carers.

The sad demise of the school trip, a rite of passage for millions

Children walking home

Last year we were made aware a few times of lower school children walking home on their own. We feel we need to make it clear that as a school we allow upper school children to walk home alone, but we would like all Year 3 & 4 children to be picked up by an adult or child over the age of 16.

So we know the children that have permission to walk home alone, please can you fill in this form below to let us know your child has your permission.
