Our Autumn Curriculum
Literacy - we begin with a unit on the myth of 'Troy' for three weeks followed by a longer unit based on 'Noah Barley Water Runs Away' by John Boyne.
Maths - we will begin our work this term focusing on place value, this will be shortly followed by some assessments to gain a better understanding of both the childrens' strengths as well as where support is needed. After this we will be looking at the formal methods of calculation for the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
Science - we will be looking at teeth and the digestion system as well as sound and how it travels. As well as this we will be investigating how our teeth can decay...we are hoping for a visit from a dental nurse!
History - we are starting off our history by looking at the Ancient Greeks, our Big Question is, 'What are we thankful to the Ancient Greeks for today?' We are also hoping to have an Ancient Greek day later on in the term - keep a look-out for more details on this.
Geography - in our first Geography unit we travel the world to learn about different languages and where our food comes from.
R.W.E - in Religious and Worldviews Education we cover two topics in year 5, alternating between Buddhism and Christianity for the entirety of the year.
Art - we explore the exciting and imaginative work of Britto and Salvador Dali to begin with!
PE - we will be covering three main activities in the Autumn term: tennis, fitness and gymnastics. Each class will have two lessons a week and will look to build on skills taught and learnt from Year 3. So far, the children have shown some fantastic tennis skills!
Computing - Internet Safety is so important, especially with social media and online gaming being so popular. We teach the children how to remain safe online, and how to use the Internet appropriately for their age group.
Music - our new music scheme 'Music Express' is set to give us far greater coverage of the music curriculum, exposing the children to a wide variety of musical genres, heritage and movements. Lots of singing and performing too, of course!
French - Mrs Pearce will teach the children how to greet each other and how to pronounce and talk about their likes, dislikes, food and the weather.
