Year 3 Newsletter (January 2023)

Welcome back everyone, we hope you had a fantastic Christmas break and are ready for the term ahead.

Firstly, a big thank you for a really super Autumn term. Year 3 settled in quickly and brilliantly, produced some excellent work and we had lots of fun together. See below for some pictures of the Cathedral trip, our local geography walk and our Diwali celebration.

Reminders:

Home/School Journal: Children will earn house points for reading at home (one for up to 4 times a week, two for 5 times a week). Every Friday we expect the journal to come in to school signed by someone at home (with a comment if possible).

Homework: Homework will be given on a Wednesday and will be expected back the following Monday. Children will be given a ‘Times Table Rockstar’, ‘Numbots’, ‘Stick and Split’ and ‘Sumdog’ login to practise maths skills at home too.

We will send home spellings to practise in all different ways each week in line with our ‘Read Write Inc’ spelling programme.

You may also be the lucky carer of our Maths’ monkey - Chimpanthree! Please complete some Maths and record your activity in the book sent home.

PE days:

Year 3's PE days are Wednesday and Thursday. Please send children to school in their PE kits (blue/black shorts, navy or white tops). Earrings should not be worn on these days and hair should be tied back.

Equipment:

Children can bring in one pencil case that contains a pencil, rubber, sharpener, glue stick and some coloured pencils.

Please remember to label EVERYTHING especially jumpers!

Curriculum Overview

Spring

Stone Age: We will be continuing our history work on the Stone Age, looking at the Hunter-gatherer life, being an archaeologist, discovering Stone Age inventions and finding out about Stonehenge and Skara Brae.

Egyptians: We will be learning about the importance of the River Nile and how it was used. We will also be finding out about the amazing discovery of Tutankhamun alongside other important finds.

* We hope to have an Ancient Egyptian day - watch this space for details.

Rocks and solis: Continued from Autumn - moving on to how soil is made up and the importance of wormeries!

Light and shadow: Understanding how shadows are made and changed.

Christianity - Jesus' Miracles: The children will find out about the great miracles Jesus showed his followers.

Helpful knowledge organisers will be sent home (and put on our school website) prior to each main topic. This will help children learn key vocabulary and important facts.
