 Friday 16th June, 2023

It's certainly been a hot one this week! This doesn't lead to the best learning conditions but the children have, as always, got on with things well and we celebrated a lot of successes in the assembly this afternoon.

Thank you to those who were able to join us yesterday morning for the year 5/6 coffee morning, and we hope to run more sessions in the new academic year. We realise 'work' stops many from attending and will continue to vary times and days to try to help everyone access opportunities in school as much as we can.

The children enjoyed listening to the Schools of Sanctuary webinars today - with authors reading their stories about refugees and next week we will be one of many schools in Norfolk recognising the 'Day of welcome'. It is an important part of PSHE learning in school, understanding how people's lives and experiences can be very different from our own and to understand how we can all support and help each other to feel welcome and part of any community. You can read more about the webinars below.

We are towards the end of all the curriculum learning for this academic year and the teachers are writing the children's reports. The reports will be sent home on Friday 7th July this year, and you will have an opportunity to speak to the current or future class teacher after school on Tuesday 11th July.

Letters will soon be sent out with further details regarding sports days (dates on the newsletter/website) and the Year 6 play 'Matilda'. Again, the dates are on the newsletter.

I hope you have a lovely weekend.

Kind regards

Matt Walton, Headteacher

School of Sanctuary

This week children from all classes have been preparing for two live webinars which are aimed at celebrating the 'Day of Welcome'. The team at Schools of Sanctuary have put together their biggest and best celebration yet with 362 schools and tens of thousands of children and young people taking part. It was amazing and inspiring this week to see so many schools coming together in solidarity and building a culture of welcome in our communities by learning about refugee migration.

Children have been doing activities this week based on books from two authors. Year 3/4 have been looking at 'The Waiting Place' by Dina Nayeri and Year 5/6 have focused on 'When Stars are Scattered' by Victoria Jamieson & Omar Mohamed. They have enjoyed listening to the stories and finding out more about what life must be like for someone who has been forced to leave their home. The week was brought to wonderful ending with live webcasts which included opportunities to reflect on the work that they had completed during the week as well as her from the authors themselves.

You can find out more about the 'Day of Welcome' and the City of Sanctuary movement on the Schools of Sanctuary in Norfolk website.

Year 5 D/T

It has been Year 5's turn this week to be cooking this week as part of their Design & Technology work. 5B were making flatbread and enjoyed covering them with garlic butter. The children are really enjoying the renewed emphasis in the curriculum on cooking, and we all enjoy lovely smells that keep flowing through the school!

The Governors will be sending out their bi-ennial survey next week. It will be an online survey and they would appreciate you spending a few minutes filling it in. The survey will be live for 4 weeks.

Maths in Year 3 is flipping fun!

Year 3 had a great time doing some maths outside this week. They spent time measuring volume, then seeing which volume was better for bottle flipping.

Mrs Richardson

We will be saying goodbye to Mrs Richardson next Friday. She has worked in the school office for 7 years and is moving on to be part of the office team at Cecil Gowan Infant School. She has been a fantastic and dedicated staff member during the time she has been with us. We know she has very much enjoyed her time working at Sprowston Junior and getting to know so many children and families during that period.

We will very much miss Mrs Richardson (and of course Teddy!) and we wish her all the very best at her new school.

Healthy T's!

Please remember that we are encouraging all children to bring a healthy snack on the T's - Tuesday's and Thursday's! We are also trying to cut down on the amount of waste going into the bins, so by encouraging a healthier snack, we hope to cut down on packaging being used. Please do try and support this eco-team initiative.
